Practise these skills next time you are stuck in traffic!

In our fast paced modern world, we are busier and more stressed than ever before. In my last article, I discussed how less obvious sources of stress can accumulate and gradually break down the body. Today, I’ll discuss some practical ways to alleviate stress and prevent it from destroying our health.

As I discussed in the previous article, eliminating unwanted sources of stress is the best solution, but isn’t always possible. The following suggestions will help you alleviate and offset the stress that you can’t avoid.

Reframe Negative Thoughts

We all have a choice in how we perceive and respond to any situation. While you may think your day is ruined because of trivial frustrations that are a common part of every day life, Nick Vujicic views every day as a blessing and an opportunity even though he has no arms or legs. Similarly, Viktor Frankl managed to find meaning and fulfillment from the treacherous conditions he endured in Nazi concentration camps. The point here is not to make you grateful for not having it as bad as these people, but rather to make you realize that there is positivity to be taken from any situation.

Overcome Training Obstacles: 7 Tips for Your Exercise Program

Editors Note: This post is written by contributer Andrew Verdon. Andrew has completed a Diploma in Exercise Science, Certificate IV in Fitness, Level 1 Strength Coaching Qualifications with ASCA. He is currently completing a Post Grad Diploma in Applied Science (Elite Sports Training) and will go on to do a Masters in Recovery.

All of us know the benefits of regular exercise and most of us are keen to exercise regularly but too often “stuff” gets in the way.

The main excuse I hear is lack of time but other excuses include lack of motivation, boredom, no energy, no access to a gym – in fact the list of excuses can be as endless as your lack of progress and results.

So what can we do to overcome these obstacles? Here’s my top seven tips to overcome these obstacles:

1. Time – make it a priority

All of us have busy lives – school, uni, work commitments, family, social and other responsibilities. Exercise time often comes very low on the list of demands on our time. The most successful people I see are those who schedule exercise into their week. They have a standing time every week and do not miss these sessions – no matter the weather or their location. Treat your session like a dentist appointment- would you blow this appointment off in your saw it in your diary? No you would show up as you know it is important.

Workout Music: Music for Your Ipod to Listen to While Exercising

Someone I used to train with said that exercising to music was cheating. That you should be listening to your body the entire time and have no external distractions. Where’s the fun in that!

There are certainly times throughout a workout where you must be focussed and ‘in the moment’. You can read my article 5 ways to train like a champion for that. But sometimes, your workout needs to be about enjoyment, needs to pep you up and have you bouncing along with a big smile on your face.

For these types of sessions, I suggest loading your ipod or mp3 player with some kick-ass tunes. Even if your energy levels are low to start, there’s nothing like the Rocky theme to fire you up!

The music I will be talking about will be suitable for the following workouts; Running, cycling, cross training, boxing, boot camp, weights and anything else requiring intensity and effort. They will not be suitable for lower intensity sessions, such as stretch, yoga, pilates, relaxation.

Motivational Quotes Competition

Truman Capote once wrote ‘To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it’s about, but the inner music the words make.’  A well written quote holds the power to shift a person from inaction to action, from deflated to inspired.

This month I am searching for the best of the best.  The creme de la creme of motivational quotes. What have you read that sends a shiver up your spine, makes you smile, raises a murmour in your heart?

What are your favorite motivational quotes? Post them below in the comments section and next month I will award a $50 Amazon voucher to the winning quote. Enter as many quotes as you wish.

Competition closes September 30th 2008. Good luck!

Last month I ran the Motivational Quotes competition and now I have to decide which one deserves to win. I loved all of them! I particularly loved Amy Common’s, Bay Martin’s, Geraldine Phillips, and Noel Lyons, but there can only be one winner, and that person is Johnny Mac. Congratulations on winning a $50 Amazon voucher for submitting this pearler:

“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”

Theodore Roosevelt

Thank you to everyone who submitted amazing quotes.

Feeling flat? 6.5 Ways to Spark Up Your Energy

Lightning over the outskirts of Oradea, Romani...Image via Wikipedia

Do you spring out of bed in the morning, ready to face the day, or is life one long struggle and you feel tired all the time? No you’re not just getting old, no it’s not the weather, your hormones, or that bottle of red you downed last night (actually, that may have something to do with it!). Lethargy is a terrible feeling and one that can be drastically improved with some modifications to your lifestyle. Follow these 6.5 ways you can inject some spark back into your life.

1. Get a good night’s sleep
For many people, the night is only young at 10:30, but if you need to work normal hours tomorrow, it is imperative to get your sleeping patterns on track. For the night owls out there, you may lay awake the first few times, but if you follow point number 2 as well, it won’t take your body long to adjust to the new time. Reading a book before bed helps, or check out these 33 secrets to a good night’s sleep.

2. Wake up between 5:30am and 6:30am.
It has been proven that there are hormones secreted around this time to wake you up, and if you don’t actually wake up at that time, they slow down, meaning it is much harder to wake up between 6:30am and 8am. Try it, you will be amazed!

The Biggest Loser. Is It a Motivator or De-motivator?

With the Australian Finale of The Biggest Loser over, viewers are left to contemplate the journey and incredible transformations of the 18 contestants. What these people achieve in 12 weeks, most of us wouldn’t achieve in a lifetime. Yet many viewers dismiss the program as “unrealistic”, “setting a poor example of healthy weight loss”, and “way too challenging to try.” With over 10% of the population watching the program it has the ability to significantly affect how people feel about exercise and weight loss. The question remains, however, is the biggest loser a motivator or de-motivator?

When throwing the topic open for discussion, it’s evident that there are many who see the show as a de-motivator. In an article from Time, the author was concerned about;

  • the program’s focus on rapid weight loss,
  • the fact that it paid little attention to the maintenance of their results
  • the rumours that drastic losses experienced often came from deliberate dehydration before a weigh in.
  • the general public might think that such high weight loss numbers were the norm.
  • Other people commented that the pain these contestants went through was too much. If weight loss was going to be that hard, then they weren’t even going to try.

I’d like to challenge these opinions, as I think that overall, the Biggest Loser is a massive motivator. It may be filmed in a 12 week pressure cooker situation leading to some of the above concerns, but I believe that the majority of viewers see that the benefits far outweigh the concerns.
