Watch out for this calorie catch-out

How many calories did you consume yesterday… no idea? You’re not alone. Many of us eat foods we think are smart choices, but they could be an energy dense calorie catch-out, contributing to weight gain. Avoid these calorie catch-outs and you might find your body shape changing faster than before!

Firstly do you even know what your daily caloric allowance is? A general guide for weight loss is 1200-1500cal/day for women and around 2000 cal/day for men. Determine your personal daily caloric intake for weight loss.

One common catch-out is coffee and tea. A couple of innocent coffee’s can end up costing you close to half your daily allowance!

Coffee shop coffee and tea
Here is a list of your favourite drinks, total calories and percentage of your daily allowance:

If you drink one coffee shop coffee per day from Starbucks or similar, you will be consuming close to ¼ of your daily allowance. If you have 2 coffees, there’s almost ½ your day gone! That’s a lot of calories for a little drink!

Solution

  1. Drink no more than 1 coffee shop coffee/tea per day
  2. Always take the skinny option
  3. Never add syrups, whipped cream etc
  4. Try herbal teas that don’t require milk
  5. Drink more water
  6. Order the smallest size

Of course, a lot of the Starbucks speciality coffees are actually ice cream with some coffee in them, hence the high fat and calorie content. I understand that the best thing to get is an Americano, which is basically a watered-down espresso, and drink it black, or with some skim milk. As a racing cyclist, of course, I am obligated by tradition to drink double espressos all day.

Further to my comment, I just checked and a Grande Caramel Mocha with whole milk and whipped cream is 470 Kcal, with 21g of fat (12g saturated fat) and 52g of sugar. Buyer beware!

Anymore when I drink tea I don’t add any sugar or any thing to it - I just drink it plain. It took a while to get used to it but now I am.

(Do you have an email address or some other way to get in touch with you? I’d like to ask you something. Thanks.)

Hi Sprocket boy,
OMG thanks for the reality check on caramel mochas! When we see the skinny celebrities sucking back on starbucks, it sends mixed messages doesn’t it! Now we know the truth… they’re drinking Americanos!

Hi Trisha,
Yes good idea with the tea. Herbal tea is delicious plain and has many antioxidants in it… green tea particularly. Be careful as it may contain caffine as well.

Thanks! I’ll send you an email tonight.

I really have to avoid caffeine, so I do watch that on the labels. It just doesn’t agree well with me.

Hi Trisha,

Yes caffeine doesn’t agree with a lot of people. Be careful as it appears in many drinks… even green tea!
